My impression from listening to the records and reading what various authors have to say on this subject is that:
1. the ODJB represents an important window on the past since they were a New Orleans group whose compositions and playing mirrored performance practices common in New Orleans of that period.
2. the ODJB had a much looser "jazz" rhythmic feel than the much stiffer "ragtime" feel of the James Reese Europe band touted in the Burns series. Again, it follows naturally that during that period, it was much more important whether a band was from New Orleans or not than what race they were.
