Cover Story

A treasure trove of band history, found in an antique store, is shared in George Borgman’s comprehensive article on Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. Never before known facts about this tremendously popular big band are presented, and there are lots of interesting details, including high and low points, band personnel (Pee Wee Hunt, Fats Daniels, Kenny Sargent, for example) and great tidbits about Bix, Red Nichols, and others. Fabulous rare photos illustrate this fascinating article.

Features

David French covers the event-packed Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Fest in Davenport where noted archivists and musicians gathered for the 35th annual festival. Ragtime reigned at the Blind Boone Ragtime & Early Jazz Festival, and fine jazz was presented at the the Caesarea Jazzfest in Israel.

Plus

Growing Up with the RAG (by the editor’s daughter, Renée Johnson), Faces of the RAG (a gallery of RAG writers and photographers), an editorial outlining upcoming changes at the RAG, and lots of CD and book reviews.
